Ultrafiltration is widely used for concentration and purification of biopharmaceuticals, but these are typically batch processes in which the feed is recirculated through the membrane module multiple times to achieve the desired separation. Single pass tangential flow filtration (SPTFF) provides an exciting alternative, using modules specifically designed to achieve high concentration factors in a single pass. SPTFF is ideal for continuous and intensified bioprocessing applications, minimizing product degradation while enabling low-fouling operation. This talk will highlight recent developments in SPTFF technology, including applications in the concentration of adeno associated virus for gene therapies, purification of mRNA for vaccines, and final formulation of monoclonal antibodies used to treat cancer.
