(466d) Contributions By Jeff Siirola to Carnegie Mellon University Research and Education in Process Systems Engineering

In this presentation we will describe the huge impact that Dr. Jeff Siirola has had on the research and teaching of process design at Carnegie Mellon University, and in the area of Process Systems Engineering at large. At Carnegie Mellon we were extremely fortunate to have had very meaningful interactions with Jeff Siirola through the membership of Eastman Chemical to our Center for Advanced Process Decision-making (CAPD) and to the Engineering Design Research Center. Through our interactions with him he promoted the development of new ideas and approaches in the areas of process synthesis, separation and heat integration systems, conceptual design, design theory /methodology, process development, sustainable development, and carbon management. We were also very fortunate to having interacted with Jeff Siirola through our senior design course where over 20 years he has provided every year a unique and relevant design project for the senior design course. In addition, he has given several lectures in that course on process synthesis and process safety. Also, during a two-year period, in which he was part time faculty at Carnegie Mellon, he put together the unique course entitled “Chemical Process Technology,” which we were very fortunate to tape as it is truly a gem in chemical engineering education. The course provides a comprehensive view on the evolution of the chemical industry, emphasizing major technology changes and sustainability issues. https://www.cheme.engineering.cmu.edu/education/online-course.html
