Professional development for chemical engineering professors ranges from one-on-one mentorship to large-scale workshops with hundreds of participants. An ad hoc committee of the AIChE Education Division aggregated and analyzed faculty development opportunities past and present. The committee’s goal was to identify areas of need with hope to initiate new programs in the areas of greatest need. Faculty development activities were sorted by both career stage—future faculty, early career, mid-career, and late career—and job role —teaching, research, service, and leadership/administration. By creating a collection of faculty development opportunities from the multiple lenses of our authors, several opportunities were identified. Many opportunities exist for future and early-career faculty while a gap exists in for mid-career faculty. Leadership and administrative roles are more common during mid- and late-career, and some training and mentoring for these roles is warranted. By sharing our findings as well as cataloging the opportunities via the AIChE Education Division, we believe AIChE, our professional organization, will help faculty thrive throughout their careers.
