Fuel cells can use hydrogen or other fuels to power clean electric vehicles, portable devices, and stationary applications. However, technical barriers including high cost, limited lifetime, and insufficient power density limit their broad applications. In this session, we will discuss the technology development and science advances in modern fuel cell technologies including a variety of categories such as proton exchange membrane fuel cells, alkaline membrane fuel cells, direct methanol fuel cells, solid oxide fuel cells, newly emerged direct ammonia fuel cells, etc. The interested topics in this session are from fundamental understanding on key components including catalysts, electrolytes, and electrode design to single cell and stack systems such as testing protocols, performance evaluation, and cost analysis.
