(57e) Development and Uptake of a Second-Year Chemical Engineering Design Open Textbook

Author

Verrett, J. - Presenter, University of British Columbia
Open educational resources (OER) have been shown to benefit students and faculty in several ways. For students, OER can remove barriers which may be financial, time-limited access, or resource format. For faculty, OER can be adapted to their course needs, for example taking or revising portions of the work based on the licensing.

This work outlines the development and impact of a textbook for a sophomore introduction to chemical engineering design course. The textbook parallels the design course and showcases chemical engineering concepts at an introductory level. The textbook consists of sections including chemical processes and diagrams, reaction chemistry and kinetics, phase equilibrium (separations), energy balances, unsteady-state operations & process control. The textbook has been active and in use since the fall of 2020. User statistics have been collected and results from these statistics will be presented in terms of country of access, device accessing the site, number of interactions, downloads and the development of these statistics over time.
