The most commonly used methods of characterization of mesoporous materials involve measurement of the adsorption isotherm for a simple gas at some low fixed temperature, usually the normal boiling point; observation of the condensation pressure in the pores makes it possible to estimate the pore size distribution. However, recent molecular simulation and experimental results show that the melting line and triple point in a porous material contain more information than the gas condensation line alone. We show recent simulation results supporting this conclusion, and suggest that measurement of the melting point and triple point in mesoporous materials may provide a more complete and reliable characterization of these materials.
