(304a) Hydrosol Filtration in Fibrous Depth Filters: Modeling of Breakthrough Curves
Depth filters are finding increased use in the downstream operations of biologics, frequently replacing membrane filters and centrifuges. In this paper, we propose a model for the filtration of hydrosols (protein suspensions) using the theory of filtration in fibrous filters and predict the breakthrough curves for proteins of different sizes, charges and solution chemistries. Breakthrough curves are shown to depend not only electokinetics but crucially, on the size distribution of the challenge hydrosols.
