AI/ML Technology for Water Treatment in Oil and Gas Industry

The opportunities and advantages of implementing Artificial intelligence (AI) and Machine learning (ML) to optimize the process control of produced water treatment in the Oil and Gas industry are discussed in this work. Discussion is centered around five major points: 1) understand the Environmental regulations being imposed and its impact affecting produced water treatment both now and in the future, 2) what constitutes produced water and the current various treatments and options used in industry, 3) opportunities for large water treatment currently in Oil and Gas industry 4) how AI and Machine learning technology has rapidly expanded in the water treatment sector proving to be both cost effective and consistent 5) how AI and Machine Learning are fit for purpose treatment, where the water is treated to the exact point needed for its purpose, along with possible paths for implementation in the Oil and Gas industry. The resulting lower cost due to consistent fit for purpose treatment and overall optimization allows for new possibilities of revenue; treating water to the point of potable water, or to the point of use for non-consumption agriculture, can be economically and environmentally feasible. This could result in an industry shift in how water treatment is approached and handled.
