Tech transfer from academic institutions to commercial deployment has been described crossing the “valley of death” because of the poor functioning and low success rates of this transfer. This talk will discuss the causes of the disfunction in this pathway, as well as the changes that can substantially increase success in tech transfer. The talk will be based on the authors experience in transitioning from a PhD in Engineering on an academic career path to being a successful entrepreneur who has founded a unicorn startup based on materials science, nanotechnology, and separations technologies.
