- (213e) Integrating Biological Functions in Artificial Membranes
One of the strategies to improve the properties of artificial membranes is to engineer biohybrid materials by integrating biocomponents into synthetic nanostructured materials to mimic bio-structures, systems, functions.
The presentation will use case studies to show that in addition to the method by which a biocomponent (e.g., an enzyme, an antibody, a cell, etc.) is loaded onto a synthetic membrane and the physicochemical properties of the material, the topography and nanoarchitecture of the membrane play a critical role in preserving the structure of the biocomponent and its associated functions.
The need for nanostructured membranes specifically designed to accommodate and implement biological functions will be discussed.
