(549b) Integrating Data Science to Chemical Engineering Curriculum Using Matlab

There is a huge interest among chemical engineering students to learn data science and there is a demand in the industry for data scientists with domain expertise. To meet this demand, many chemical engineering programs are exploring ways to integrate data science into their curriculum. Data science requires programming skills and knowledge of advanced statistics amongst other disciplines. Equipping instructors and students with the skills needed for data science can be achieved easily with MATLAB.

In this talk, we will focus on how free self-paced tutorials, free e-books, videos, automated grading tools, an interactive notebook environment and user stories from industry can help instructors teach engaging data science courses to chemical engineers. We will highlight how machine learning was taught in a freshman chemical engineering course and share tools and resources available to integrate data science throughout chemical engineering curriculum.
