(111d) Advancements in PEM Electrolyzers and Uses in the Renewable Energy Economy
Author
Hamdan, M. - Presenter, Giner ELX, Inc.
PEM-based electrolyzers are at the leading edge of a global energy system transformation and are proving to be an enabling technology for renewable energy management; peak shaving, storage, pollution control, and greenhouse gas reduction. Correspondingly, this vision of a renewable energy economy, in parallel with generator-to-grid pathways, incorporates abundant renewable energy which is transformed first to hydrogen, then onward to chemical potential energy storage. In this future, the myriad chemicals, fertilizers, and fuels (both liquid as well as gaseous) that make modern life convenient, healthful, and productive, are manufactured while achieving a lowâeven zero carbon footprint. The presentation addresses the recent advancements in Giner ELXâs MW-scale PEM-based electrolyzer technology, projects and commercial opportunities for direct electrolyzer integration with renewable power sources, and cost reduction expectations with increasing scale-up of the technology.
