(79a) Experimental and Theoretical Studies of the Electrochemical Reduction of CO2 on Cu

The electrochemical and photoelectrochemical reduction of CO2 to chemicals and fuels has been the subject of considerable interest in recent years. We have been pursuing the subject through a series of experimental and theoretical studies with the objective of identifying the factors controlling the distribution of products formed, with particular interest on establishing how to enhance the formation of C2+ hydrocarbons and oxygenates. This work has revealed that the activity of Cu for forming such products depends on the surface composition and morphology of Cu, the composition and concentration of electrolyte cation and anions, and the magnitude of the applied potential. We have also found that mass transfer of CO2 to the catalyst surface and OH- anions from the catalyst surface can also modify the distribution of products observed. This talk will talk will illustrate how information obtained from experiments and theory can be used to elucidate the fundamental processes governing product distribution.
