(372r) 3D Printed Centrifugal Pump Impellers: A Unit Operations Experiment
Authors
One potential use of 3D printing in the Chemical Engineering Unit Operations is reported here. An experiment has been developed that requires students to design, print, and test a centrifugal pump impeller. The efficiency of the impeller is evaluated through generation of a pump curve.
The experiment offers several unique learning aspects in that students are required to: 1) assemble a centrifugal pump â albeit a small one, 2) develop proficiency with CAD software â a skill desired by employers, 3) translate fluid mechanics theory into a real design, and 4) 3D print a functioning object.
The experiment has been used for the past two semesters in the lab course. Challenges with developing 3D printing experiments will be reviewed and samples of student work will be shared. Reflections on how the experiment impacts student learning will be offered.
