Porous carbon material can be synthesized from sodium borohydride (NaBH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2) under an atmospheric pressure and moderate temperature. The synthesized carbon material can be used as an advanced electrochemical energy material, such as active electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and electrode materials for supercapacitor or secondary battery. The composites of the carbon material with metal oxides exhibited enhanced electrochemical properties when applied in various electrodes due to increased specific surface area, improved electrical conductivity, and stable interaction between carbon material and metal oxides.
