A critical weakness of formal education is relating theory to practice. In 2016, we at Engineering Research Consulting were invited to help start a STEM-focused university in Senegal that would address the need of a practical education. The university is called Dakar American University of Science and Technology (DAUST). It is located in Somone, southeast of the capital Dakar. DAUST opened its doors in January of 2017.
To address the issue of practical teaching, heavy emphasis is placed on seminars from working professionals, field trips, internships, international exchanges, and lab work. Professors with industry experience are highly valued at DAUST. Although the official language of Senegal is French, classes are taught in English to prepare students to share ideas with the rest of the scientific community.
DAUST offers science and engineering courses, including chemical engineering, at the bachelorâs and graduate levels. DAUST has several research centers including the Center for Energy Research and Sustainability (CERS). Research topics at CERS will center mostly around energy (both fossil and renewable) and water.
