International Flavors & Fragrances Inc. (IFF) is a leading global creator of flavors and fragrances for a wide variety of consumer products. Our research and development processes are driven by the application of circular principles in the very early stages of design. This approach eliminates the traditional “take-make-dispose” model in favor of one that is restorative and regenerative by design – it enables ingredients to come from nature and return to nature or be repurposed in a circular and continually sustainable way.

One way in which we apply circular design thinking is through our use of green chemistry, which has long been an embedded part of molecule discovery and manufacturing processes at IFF. Green chemistry aims to increase “naturalness” in products and processes by mimicking chemistry in nature, avoiding corrosive or hazardous materials, minimizing waste and improving process energy efficiency. Example processes illustrate how we utilize circular design principles and green engineering technologies to enhance the sustainability of our new and existing fragrance compounds.
