The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) officially known as “Transforming our world: the 2030 agenda for Sustainable Development” is a set of 17 “Global Goals” defined by the United Nations. Biotechnology is uniquely poised to help address many of the challenges associated with achieving the SDGs. In this lecture, I will describe how biotechnology can help achieve these goals, in particular those related to “climate change”, “sustainable production”, and “improved health and wellbeing”. The strategies of systems metabolic engineering for the bio-based production of chemicals and materials will be presented with recent example products. Also, systems biological and machine learning approaches taken to solve some problems associated with the current drugs will also be presented.
