2017 Annual Meeting

Session: Coal Conversion to Value-Added Chemicals and Power in Modular Systems

Coal is an abundant and low-cost energy source that can be used to produce energy as well as valuable chemicals either directly or for further downstream processing. The concept of a modular process is intended to design a process that can bring the production of these chemicals to the mining site allowing direct shipment from the site to an intermediate or end-user without the user having to deal with the byproducts. The by-products could then potentially be sent to another user for additional revenue streams. The objective of this panel will be to explore the R&D occurring in the processing of coal into value-added chemicals. Value-added chemicals could include traditional Fischer-Tropsch products to polymer pre-coursers to fuel additives or anything beyond combustion of syngas.
