(60f) High Resolution Characterization of Colloid Size Distributions By Field Flow Fractionation

High resolution characterization of particle size distribution in colloidal dispersions has remained a great challenge for long time, making it difficult to understand suspensions containing particles with size covering a wide range, which have unique optical, mechanical and optical properties. Previous analytical tools have weaknesses of low resolution, statistical non-reproducibility, or difficulty in data analysis. With motivation in exploring characterization method of multi-modal size distribution, Field Flow Fractionation (FFF) was used to separate colloidal particles first before analyze the size by Multi-Angle Light Scattering (MALS) and dynamic light scattering (DLS). Effects of particle size range, cross flow rate setting, composition of particle, eluent selection, membrane type were searched to build up universal understanding of the principles of designing test method for a variety of experimental systems in FFF.
