(74i) Stanley Sandler's Contributions to the Development of Equations of State

Professor Sandler has authored or co-authored nearly 400 refereed journal articles, and approximately 20 percent of these papers are directly related to the development of equation of state theory including many publications on novel mixing rules that combine excess free energy (activity coefficient) models with popular cubic EOS’s (Peng-Robinson, Soave-Redlich-Kwong, van der Waals EOS’s). Other notable work includes the introduction of a generalized van der Waals partition function as a basis for EOS mixing rules and with application to square-well fluids. Moreover, Professor Sandler’s group applied Wertheim’s first-order perturbation theory for the dimer reference fluid to obtain equations of state for hard-sphere chain fluids, and they obtained useful new molecular simulation data for the hard-dimer radial distribution function at contact value. Dr. Sandler and one of his students also developed an accurate and greatly simplified dispersion term for the statistical associating fluid theory (SAFT) EOS’s. He has made several other contributions in this area, which include several book chapters and a few complete books dedicated to equations of state.
This talk will highlight specific milestones in the career of Professor Stanley I Sandler specifically related to the development of equations of state, and the author will make connections to his own work where the honoree has provided inspiration and motivation.
