Shale, an ordinary semi permeable sedimentary rock has been no short of a miracle drug to the US energy sector. Shale gas is today regarded as the 'next' fuel for the entire world after the demonstration in the US, regarding its cleanliness in combustion and lower rates than conventional crude oil. The present work primarily focuses on the basic properties of Shale gas that builds it possible to be rehearsed and how it differs from other conventional sources. It also discusses about how the shale gas helps in reducing the effects of conventional oil and the other advantages that it has offered like reduction in CO2 emissions. The work also focuses on the various techniques which are involved in the origin of the shale gas such as hydraulic fracturing and horizontal drilling. In the final, there is a discussion on the IEA approved practices and norms which should be strictly adhered to for sustainable extraction and usage of shale gas. The work derives that there is a requirement of new and stringent regulations to preclude deprivation of an historic opportunity to provide cheaper and cleaner energy to satisfy the world consumption, as easily as to usher in the future development of the shale gas industry.
