The
FAA is working to enable the U.S. use of one billion gallons per year of
?drop-in? sustainable alternative jet fuels by 2018. Airlines and aerospace
manufacturers around the world have also expressed continuously increasing
interest in the replacement of jet fuel from fossil fuels to renewable fuels
from biomass. Despite the considerable investment in the research of several
different conversion strategies, establishing the successful commercial
production of biorenewable jet fuel remains a challenge. In this presentation,
we will review strategies to use alcohols as a platform molecule to generate
jet fuel and other products. By highlighting the technical opportunities and
barriers in the process, we aim to provide insight into the various political
and economic challenges faced in making and meeting renewable fuel goals.
