Abstract: In this work, platinum nanoparticles supported on multiwalled carbon nanotubes and encapsulated by cerium oxide were prepared by a facile solvothermal method. The shell of obtained core-shell catalysts have a dense overlayer which is made of CeO2 nanoparticles with the
diameter of~10 nm. A triphasic catalytic system (Pt/MWCNTs@CeO2) with an “islands” in the sea
configuration has demonstrated to prevent Pt nanoparticles (NPs) from sintering by of CeO2 deposition onto the surface of carbon versus the surface of Pt NPs. Meanwhile, the strongly interfacial effect between the Pt NPs and CeO2 has proven to be high activity. In contrast to
samples prepared in the absence of cerium oxide (Pt/MWCNTs), both the activity and the stability
of core-shell catalysts is largely enhanced, resulting in nanocomposites with remarkable
performance for the water-gas-shift reaction.
