(269d) The Effect of the Rod Rotation Near a Wall on the Shape Separation of Rodlike Particles Using Field Flow Fractionation

A numerical study was performed to investigate the effect of the pole-vault type rotation of a rodlike particle on the shape (aspect ratio) separation of rodlike particles in the field-flow fractionation (FFF). FFF has been applied to the separation of gold nanoparticles (GN) according to the aspect ratio difference [Gigault et al. (2013) Anal. Bioanal. Chem., 405:1191-1202]. However, the experimental results of the elution times cannot be clearly explained by the current theories. It was postulated that the separation results are caused by the coupling of the pole-vault type rotation, which is a rod rotation affected by the excluded volume effect of a wall, and the cross flow field. We discuss the coupling effect on the shape separation of rodlike particles using FFF as a function of the flow rate ratio of the axial flow and the cross flow.
