2013 AIChE Annual Meeting
(71a) I'm a Chemical Engineer. Why Should I Become a PE?
Many chemical engineers think Professional Engineering licensure is needed only when they are required to stamp drawings. As a result relatively few practicing chemical engineers consider obtaining Professional Engineer licensure. This presentation briefly outlines the value of becoming licensed from both the personal and business perspective. It presents the most common areas of engineering practice where having a PE can be beneficial or even mandatory by state law.
Licensure is based upon education, examination and experience. The presentation discusses both current and possible education requirements. It discusses the variability of experience requirements between various states. The presentation gives an overview of the Fundamentals Exam (FE) and Principles and Practice of Engineering exam (PE) required for licensure. It briefly discusses the process for making sure the exams are relevant and graded fairly. The FE exam will be making major changes in 2014 and an overview of these changes will be presented.
