This presentation describes an experiment to study powder flow through a moving orifice. The results and underlying science are rich and counterintuitive. Experimental observations, discrete-element modeling, and granular-temperature theory will be used to describe and explain the phenomena. The device also presents an opportunity to solve the common practical problems of funnel flow, ratholing, and cohesive arching during discharge from silos.
