Focus here is development of production scale processes and specifically with modifying optimized laboratory processes that are unsuitable for large-scale operations. Our example is production of high-value fermentation produced biologicals such as therapeutic proteins, and we approximate value in terms of evolutionary fitness dagrams. We also suggest that speed and economy of development can often be ncreased quite significantly by judicious incorporation of heuristics.  We show that one is rapidly led bythis kind of thinking to radical but highly beneficial new processes ffor industrial scale operation. Success un such a procedure rquires careful specification of system and goals.
