(707d) Percolation Segregation in a Sheared Bed of Particles

Segregation negatively impacts many powder processing operations, but few tools exist to quantitatively evaluate and predict this phenomenon. In order to assess segregation due to percolation quantitatively, a discrete element method (DEM) model has been developed to simulate a shear cell containing a bimodal size distribution of particles. The steady state flux at which fine particles percolate downward through the bed is recorded for a wide range of shear rates, normal loads, fines concentrations, and particle size ratios. The simulation results are compared to the analytical random, fluctuating sieve model developed by Savage and Lun (1988).
