In our laboratory, we have developed a new efficient apparatus for gas treatment in which a cylindrical and porous ceramic filter and non-thermal plasma were combined, and the reactor was applied to decompose various volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as trichloroethylene and benzene. In our previous study, energy efficiency to decompose VOCs was improved considerably by optimizing power frequency. On the other hand, the decomposition mechanism is still unknown because of its complicated discharge mode. Therefore, in this study, the effect of power frequency on the generation ratio and strength of surface, void, and barrier discharge in the reactor was examined in detail to clarify the decomposition mechanism. From the results, it was found that although the reactor was designed to utilize the surface discharge mainly to decompose gaseous pollutants, contribution of void discharge in the ceramic pores and barrier discharge between ceramic inner surface and center electrode were also not negligible.
