A post-combustion CO2 capture process using aminosilicone solvents offers advantages over conventional MEA-based aqueous solvent methods. The aminosilicone-based process can potentially decrease the overall size of the system, decrease the amount of required energy for desorption, and therefore reduce the overall cost of CO2 capture process. A bench-scale system is currently being developed to demonstrate the technical feasibility of continuous CO2 absorption and desorption with liquid aminosilicones, including recovery and reuse of the solvent. Upon completion of the design and construction, the system will be used to generate the data needed for further scale-up of the process. Some physical properties of the aminosilicones including surface tension, viscosity, heat of CO2 absorption, and desorption and absorption isotherms were measured and are currently used in design of unit operations. These results and their effect on the cost of CO2 capture process will be discussed.
