2012 AIChE Annual Meeting
(19a) Hopper Design for Binary Mixtures
At the previous several year’s conferences our group presented work (Jacob and Vasquez, 2009, “The Role of Fines in Controlling the Flow of Bulk Solids”, AIChE Conference, Session 56, Talk a; Freireich, Jacob, and Kodam, 2010, “Flowability of Binary Mixtures: Effects of Fines Concentration”, AIChE Conference, Session 544, Talk c; Freireich, Jacob, Kodam, and Kayrak-Talay, 2011, “Flowability of Binary Mixtures: Effects of Fines Concentration”, AIChE Conference, Session 357, Talk a) elucidating the effects of fines on the flowability of bulk solids. Since those presentations, even further studies have been conducted scrutinizing these effects. Specifically, using a Schulze ring shear tester, key parameters such as unconfined yield strength, angle of internal friction, and effective angle of internal friction as function of consolidation stress were determined for narrow size distributions of coarse and fine materials. Experimental data and analysis will be presented. In particular, for this talk we discuss the consequences of these material effects on the resulting hopper design.
