Session: Bioprocessing and Reactive Extractions

Extraction has become an important unit operation for bioproduct separations because it is able to isolate, concentrate, and purify these products from dilute solutions. We seek papers that describe fundamentals and novel applications of extraction in bioproduct recovery and purification. Examples include, but are not limited to, biofuel recovery from fermentation broth, primary recovery of proteins from cell cultures, two aqueous phase extraction and micellar systems for selective partitioning of proteins, and reversible chemical complexation for the recovery of complex organics. This session also focuses on reactive extractions in a wide range of applications. Papers focused on the application of chemical engineering fundamentals to reactive solvent extractions, including chemical thermodynamics, reaction mechanisms and kinetics, and mass transfer phenomena are strongly encouraged. Topics relevant to the separation of heavy metals, radioactive materials, and associated processes will be given special consideration.
