Industrial scale processes for the production of biodiesel from algae has still not been developed, due to current technological challenges. The efficient and environmentally friendly extraction of lipids from algae utilizing solvents remains a critical part of the process to be design, and the main focus on this research. This research investigates the solvent extraction of lipids from microalgae (Ankistrodesmus) by the application of electric fields. Electric fields can aid in rupturing the cell membrane as well as intensifying solvent-lipid mass transfer. If proven feasible, this intensification technique could translate into smaller extraction equipment, less solvent usage, a more sustainable and green process, and finally a lower processing cost.
