In this work, the separation of butanol from the ABE fermentation broth was studied with the series of distillation column in Aspen Plus simulation. Sensitivity analysis, heat integration and optimization were done to reduce heat duty, number of columns and size of the column. Cost analysis was obtained for the complete butanol separation process with Aspen Icarus. The results were then compared with the cost projections using solvent extraction to reduce the volume of bulk stream before distillation.
