Ernest W. Thiele impacted and provided guidance to three areas of chemical engineering during each of their infancies. Those areas were:

distillation;

solid porous catalysis;

nuclear reactions and nuclear engineering.

This talk presents an appreciation of Thiele's career and discusses the impact Thiele had on distillation, catalysis, and nuclear engineering --- before it became nuclear engineering, when it was still chemical engineering.
