On April 21-22, 2008, a workshop about Smart Process Manufacturing was held at the NSF headquarters in Washington, DC. This two-day workshop focused on the development of the first iteration of a technology roadmap including critical research needs for achieving smart process manufacturing with zero incidents and zero emissions. Participation included eighteen industrial participants from fourteen companies, fourteen academics and two participants from NSF. The workshop encompassed applications in chemical, biological, pharmaceuticals, and materials industries, and involved energy, environmental, and safety perspectives in the process context. The roadmap process was designed around a functional model of the subject area. Workshop participants elaborated on Technology, Systems and Facilities, and Enterprise Management. This paper presents the results of the workshop.
