Silver vanadium oxide is commercially used as a cathode material in lithium primary batteries that power implantable medical devices. We are exploring silver vanadium phosphate (SVOP) as a potential next generation cathode material. The SVOP material was successfully synthesized via hydrothermal techniques. Characterization methods included X-ray powder diffraction, thermal analysis, and scanning electron microscopy. Cathode formulations with SVOP as the active material were developed. Coin cells were fabricated utilizing lithium anodes, SVOP cathodes, and carbonate based electrolytes. Electrochemical testing of the coin cells was conducted to evaluate performance under constant current and pulsed conditions.
