It is well known that porous carbons such as carbon black, activated carbon, carbon nanotube, etc are very useful as a catalyst support and absorbent. The microporous carbon materials have also been used as an electrode and catalyst support in the fuel cell system. But, the application of the microporous carbons is restricted by their small pore size and wide pore size distribution. In this reason, recently reported ordered mesoporous carbon (OMC), which can be produced by replication using ordered mesoporous silica as the template, has great advantages due to the regular mesopores and the subsequent high surface area. However, for the preparation of OMC, the tedious and energy consuming carbonization process is inevitable, which usually takes tens of hours. In the present work, carbonization for the production of OMC is induced by microwave irradiation and compared with conventional method using electric furnace. The microwave irradiation endowed not only ultra-fast carbonization but also widened range of carbonization temperature. The consequent OMCs obtained by microwave irradiation are confirmed to have high conductivity and controllable oxygen content. The OMC samples are characterized by XRD, N2 sorption, SEM, TEM, Raman, and so on.
