(547c) Undergraduate Chemical Engineering Option: Biology Track

Author

Barnett, S. M. - Presenter, University of Rhode Island

Dissatisfied with a meaningless name change, our chemical engineering faculty reconsidered the traditional curriculum. Consulting with our industrial advisory board, students and colleagues at other institutions, we created a strong biological engineering option. We reduced certain chemistry courses to provide room for advanced biology courses, but we follow the chemical engineering paradigm. We have yet to change our name, but enrollment has multiplied by a factor of two and three. Students have transfered from the sciences and biomedical engineering to gain an engineering degree with strong biology requirements.
