Multiscale structured equipment including microchannel devices has proven appropriate for the highly exothermic and yet thermally sensitive alkylation of aromatic compounds. In the framework of the Integrated Project IMPULSE as funded by the European Commission, this family of reactions has been thoroughly studied. In-line spectroscopy, along with other methods such as reaction calorimetry, is evaluated for the proper design of a full-scale production or even for a smart control of the production itself. Based on experimental evidence, the PAT (process analytical technology) perspective can be discussed in terms of ease of operation, reliability, cost etc. A sophisticated control of the reaction will increase the purity of the product and hence save energy-consuming purification steps downstream.
