The Lattice Boltzmann Method has proved to be an effective means for multiphase flow simulations. However, its use in realistic engineering applications is restricted because of some well-known weaknesses, such as the limited density ratio range and spurious currents near the two-phase interface. Recently, it has been shown that the formulation of the interaction potential, which is determined by the equation of state, has important effects on the density ratio range in a single-component system. In this study, the effect of the interaction potential in the multi-component pseudo-potential approach proposed by Shan and Chen is analyzed. The spurious currents are also reduced if sufficient isotropy is retained in the discretization of the interacting force. These improvements have been incorporated into the multi-component Lattice Boltzmann Method. The simulation results show enhanced stability and reduced spurious currents.
