Soft template composed of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS)- polyethyleneglycol (PEG) clusters provides a simple and controllable wet chemical approach to prepare Au nanoparticles. We demonstrate herein the approach to synthesize Au nanoplates and nanorings. The synthesis was templated by a soft template composed of SDS-PEG clusters. In the process, H[AuCl4] was self-reduced by PEG to form Au quantum dots (AQD), the produced AQD self-assembled to hexagon-shaped gold nanoplates, and then turned into nanorings at ambient temperature and atmosphere. These Au nanostructures are homogeneous in size and dispersed well. The prepared Au nanoplates and nanorings could be oriented on the surface of the substrate and might help to explore new applications in the direct electrochemistry of biomolecules such as horseradish peroxidase in the future.
