Oxycombustion tests have been performed in a 250,000 BTU/hr tangentially fired combustion test facility utilizing three different coals (lignite, sub bituminous and bituminous) and thermal and emissions performance have been compared against corresponding air blown combustion tests. In order to get a better understanding of the system dynamics during startup with air based combustion and transition to oxycombustion, measurements have been made of the dynamic temperature profiles in the boiler and the flue gas composition. This paper will report on the results obtained from the above study and the implications in the design of oxycombustion plants.
