This talk will recollect some of the pioneering work of E.E. Petersen and G. Somorjai to study catalysis on single crystal surfaces under reaction conditions. The speaker learnt about these studies from the work of his co-workers but it has a lasting impression that eventually led to his current research in using operando spectroscopic techniques.
