This paper will discuss and address problems unique to chemical pilot plant safety as compared to full sized chemical plants. There are potential unique safety problems for chemical pilot plants related to:
  • Management and staff training and experience
  • The facility mission
  • Equipment size and selection
  • Process and chemical hazard knowledge
  • Pilot plant location and available support facilities
  • Effluent handling

    The paper will also discuss tools for characterizing chemical reaction hazards, emergency pressure relief system design and equipment for small scale emergency pressure relief.
