The Methane to products theme of the Long-Range Research program aims to create options for converting methane into valuable products, and doing so with a reduced CO2 footprint. Currently methane is mainly used as a gas for its heating value, but it can have applications in the chemical industry that are currently based on the cracking of liquid petroleum products. If methane is converted to large scale products that can be sequestered post-consumer use, the CO2 footprint could be substantially reduced.
This poster explains ways in which methane can be converted into useful products that are of interest to the petrochemicals industry, with the premises of inexpensive renewable energy, and a carbon constrained world.
