This paper outlines the salient approach and methodology adopted by Gulf Petrochemical Industries Company (GPIC) for successfully achieving ISO 17020 Certification for “General Criteria for the operation of various types of bodies performing inspection” and Full Compliance to the requirement of Process Safety Management mechanical integrity OSHA 1910 with a core question of will such accreditation and compliance will add value or not to the existing inspection practice?

The paper will focus on how the historic traditional inspection systems is restructured using risk based inspection (RBI), ISO 17020 requirements, and PSM mechanical integrity concepts in a reliable and cost effective manner.
