Distribution Risk Review: A Corporate Tool to Assess Transportation Risk

Distribution Risk Review is a methodology to assess and evaluate the risks associated with transportation of dangerous goods. The methodology consists of the application of a multi-disciplinary questionnaire to a certain movement of interest to identify the hazards and risks associated with the chemical, the route, the movement, the storage and the loading/unloading operations. The questionnaire is structured in four main topics: Material Hazards, Market Overview, Risk Management Information and Risk Management Strategies. Detailed subjects include: Security, Potential impact to the communities along the route, Maintenance systems of transportation equipment, operating procedures, emergency response and training and certification programs. This paper presents the content of the tool, the approach used with stakeholders (carriers, businesses, plants, etc), how the tool is used in the field and final report with the result of the evaluation. An example of a real case is given.
